How to find the most popular topics on YouTube for your market...
Here's a simple way to find the most popular topics on YouTube...
This example shows you how to uncover the topics with the most traffic...
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Go to Google Trends, and type in a market or topic keyword.
Step 2: Click “+ Compare” and type in a second topic.
Step 3: Choose the region where most of your customers live.
Step 4: Select 12 months for the time range.
Step 5: Choose All Categories and YouTube Search.
Step 6: Take a look at the bar graph in the lower left corner.
Here's how to interpret these results:
“In the last 12 months, in the United States, there have been more YouTube searches that contain the word “shopify” than contain the word “etsy”.
Now we know which topic gets more searches on YouTube.
You can compare up to 5 keywords at the same time...so this is a great way to narrow down which topics to make your videos about.
But wait...there’s more. :)
You can also use this technique to find out how your market “talks”...
Every market and industry has it's own jargon.
Take a look at this:
“Store” vs “Shop” may not seem like a big difference, but those searching on YouTube for videos about Etsy clearly prefer to use “shop” over “store”.
And the opposite is true for Shopify...
They almost always prefer the word "store" to "shop".
One thing to note...
To get accurate results, put quotation marks around keyword phrases in Google trends...
For this example, Google Trends looks for the exact keyword "shopify store" or keyword phrases that contain "shopify store".
Now, there's one more thing you need to be aware of, before you try this out...
This method works really well to determine how big an audience is on YouTube...
... at the market or topic level.
Think one or two words.
But, if you try and use this technique for long tail keywords, you'll probably see something like this:
That's because Google Trends data is normalized, and there's a search volume cutoff.
The best I can tell from some quick tests, the search volume cutoff seems to be about 2,000 searches per month.
In other words, if there are fewer than 2,000 searches per month on YouTube for the keyword, you won’t get any Google Trends results.
That’s just my best guess.
They’re not sharing the real number. :)
But, there is a way to predict search volume for individual long tail keywords, even in small niche markets.
And it’s quick and easy.
I show you how to do that here...
Head over to Google Trends and try this method out...
Do a few quick searches for some markets or topics you're interested in, and see what you discover.
You can uncover which topics are popular on YouTube and what jargon and words they use most often.
Then you'll know where the biggest audiences are and how to serve them better...
It’s fun to try and guess which markets and topics are more popular on YouTube. Use this method to see how often you're correct.
It’s a real eye opener and a good reminder to always do your research first.
