Part 2 of 3 in our Content Series
Maintaining Reader Momentum Throughout Your Content
4. Does the content facilitate movement to keep people reading?
Take a quick check of the middle of your content – is there anything there to keep people reading until the end?
If not, try this: write a line to build anticipation for what's coming. For example, "In just a moment, you'll find out which food you should never eat when you're trying to lose weight. But first…"
If not, try this: insert a sub-headline that introduces the next section. For example, "Good marathoners follow the rules of training. Great marathoners do this..."
If not, try this: use phrases that promise more such as: "let me explain," "here's why," "want to know the best part?", "anyone can do this...," "here's an example" and so forth.
Creating Content That Solves Real Problems
5. Does the content solve a problem?
In other words, is your content genuinely useful? Whether the outcome you intended was to help others solve a problem, reach a goal or better enjoy an interest, did you succeed with that objective?
If not, find out why. Ask yourself:
Did you provide enough detail in order for your audience to complete the needed steps? If not, go back to add extra instructions, tips and examples.
Did you focus on solving just ONE problem? If not, rewrite to make your content more focused (and thus more useful).
Ensuring Your Instructions Are Crystal Clear
6. Are the instructions simple and easy-to-understand and implement?
They may seem easy to you, but you're an expert. What you want to do is get a few beta users to read your content and then put the information to work. Let their feedback guide you on how to improve your instructions.
7. Is this content something that people actually want?
You can create something really useful and engaging, but if no one cares then you're not going to get good results.
Here's what to do: complete your market research upfront, and then only write about topics that your audience is actively searching for and interested in. Understanding how to write engaging content starts with knowing what your audience actually needs.
