This is how you find new keywords using Google Trends...
Here are some tips to make sure you're finding the best new keyword trends using Google Trends...
After you perform your search, zoom out to see the big picture...
In Google Trends, this is critical, because without the right filters, you may not be seeing current trends that matter.
Date filters are probably the most confusing part of Google Trends.
Google has trend data all the way back to 2004.
But there's something you really need to understand about how Google uses date ranges.
In Google Trends, if there has been a trend anytime within the date range, it will show.
For example, let's say that in 2007-2009 there was a trend for the topic "Pokemon digital recorder".
And let's say that the trend is long over, and these things are now collecting dust in bargain bins at every thrift store in town.
Well, if you select the date range of 2004-present, Google will report this as a trend.
Why?
Because Google Trends reports any trend that occured within the entire time period.
So, before you ever spend time working on a trend, be sure you take a look at the trend graph for the entire time range (2004-2020).
Is the trend going up, going down, or steady?
Also, pay close attention to categories, because they can be difficult to understand and even misleading.
You see, Google tries to pick the right category.
But, they often get it wrong.
When you choose a category, you're telling Google to restrict the data to just that specific category.
So, if you choose "Autos" and then put in the keyword "mustang", Google might give incorrect trend data because they categorized this keyword under Horses instead of Autos.
That's one reason I usually leave "All Categories" selected. It avoids the wrong categorization issue entirely.
But, one excellent way to find hot trends is to use the category filter, but DON'T provide a keyword to Google.
Google will then bring back trends they find in the entire category, without your input.
That's a great way to find brand new, untapped keywords in your market.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
