Great Step-by-Step SEMRush Tutorial
Here’s a good overview of how you can use SEMRush to find lots of great keywords for your business. This video covers the new SEO Keyword Magic feature in SEMRush, including the keyword difficulty score.
While keyword difficulty will vary from site to site (strength of your own site vs. competitors, etc.), it is helpful to get a overall idea of the difficulty of a group of terms to help narrow down your focus.
There are some great keyword research tips in this video, and even if you don’t have a paid SEMRush account, you can still use many of these features in your keyword research. Even with a free account, you can get some excellent data to make better decisions for which keywords and competitors you should keep your eyes on.
Hey guys parent here and this is of course a review of the new sem rush keyword research tool you can tell it’s no because down by the key word magic tab it says beta so please keep that in mind this is a beta if you want to go try it yourself you can and then you can give them feedback using their little system here or you can email them so I highly encourage you to do that especially after watching this video if you’re following along with the blog post for which this video was created you will know that we are doing this review in the context of all the other keyword research tools that have either made new additions or who have launched tools and mostly we’re sticking to the big companies so asking rush aah refs Moz and we’re also reviewing long tail Pro because it is arguably the best specialized quote-unquote small guy this is our run-through of sem rush what we are doing to review this tool is instead of just talking about the features what we like what we don’t like we are going to imagine that we have an imaginary website in this case it is a scuba site and we are going to do some keyword research for that market so um with sem rush you can do this in one of two ways so of the four tools we are reviewing two of the tools will allow you to do both kinds of keyword research i think are possible so i put keyword research into two categories one I call traditional keyword research that’s where you put in some input in a tool returns a whole bunch of keywords and gives you some data on those keywords all four of the keyword research tools do that only two however do the other kind of keyword research which is what i call competitor analysis and that is allowing you to find keywords based on what your competitors are doing because sem Rush started as a competitor analysis tool it shouldn’t be surprising that to do a really good job with the competitor analysis part they have just added though is a more traditional keyword research tool that’s what most of the focus of this blog post in this review is based around so I want to use that tool to do some preliminary keyword research walk you through what I’m finding and then talk about some of the things that I like and I don’t like but we’re going to treat this as more of a practical application at anything so let’s say we have a scuba site if we were inside of sem rush we would go to the keyword magic tool type in our seed keyword and this can be anything you want but you’re probably going to get the best results if you start with something general like tools or like Moz rather you can only type in one seed keyword as far as I know then you’ll get a huge list of keywords afterwards one of the things that I really like that sem rush does with their keyword research tool that nobody else does is that after it gives you this huge list of keywords especially for a really general query like scuba on the left hand column it will auto categorize all the keywords into these groups based on semantic relationships right so for scuba you can see that there are two thousand diving keywords there are keywords about tanks or keywords a have best and gear in them so these would be your more ecommerce or or affiliated keywords there are certificate keywords sale Florida lessons packages there’s probably so yeah so certificate here beaches um so this is a really good way to get a feel for a market and STM Russia’s doing a really good job of this and it’s making a strong case for itself to be the best tool for somebody who doesn’t know anything about the market because you can start with something very general and see a whole bunch of little subcategories right off the bat then you have for either the whole list or any of these subcategories you can see all the keywords plus or data and you have filters up here so this is common for three of the tools hrs and longtail probing the other ones where you can include certain keywords or exclude certain keywords so say you know you’re not going to have an e-commerce store and you want to exclude ecommerce keywords you can type in may be for sale or bi or discount or any of those other modifiers that would signify to google that this is an e-commerce site because it’d be tough to rank for them if you’re if you’re not doing any commerce store you can filter by volume you can filter by KD which is keyword difficulty CPC competition or and then this is the other feature I really like from sem rush SERP features so what a certain features search features are the things that are showing up in the serps that aren’t just text links these days right so answer boxes knowledge graphs news tweets carousel ads that sort of thing you can figure out which which keywords include those things and which don’t if you’re looking at this group of keywords you can also click on this little thing and it’ll tell you yes there are images in this search results page or there are videos or maybe for some of these keywords there are certain types of ads or answer boxes or whatever so all of that is really useful one of the problems I have with STM rush is that it’s a little bit clunky and most of the other tools if you were to click keyword it would expand below it so you could see either more data or the top 10 results for that page in the SERP and you know whatever data goes along with that for sem rush every time you want to look at the keyword that’s going to open it in a new tab which has a lot of useful data has CPC distribution as trends it has other phrase match keywords and related keywords that’s all really useful but if you’re doing keyword research and bulk like a lot of us do it’s makes the whole process I’m really clunky I would even maybe call it extraordinarily clunky you don’t want to have 50 or 100 tabs open every time you’re doing keyword research right the other issue I have with SM Russian I have this issue with two of the other tools as well as that you cannot save keywords you can only export them to a spreadsheet and then sort through that spreadsheet and save them on your own one of the things that I think is a really common sense feature for a keyword research tool is being able to freight favorite or save keywords inside of the tool organize them inside of the tool and keep track of them inside of the tool yeah we all have spreadsheets we might use them for riders outsourcing content or showing our boss or keeping track for things on our our in but um I think for the most part you should be able to keep track of your keyword research campaigns inside your tool there’s a projects button up here that is not for keyword research projects so what do I like what do I not like about this tool the first thing that I really like is the auto categorization for general keywords i think that is incredibly useful especially if you are entering a new market you can start with a really general keyword and get a very good idea of what’s going on in the market right i also like the cert features and i also like the amount of data that the keyword research tool returns and of course these filters which should be common that aren’t necessarily common are always good to have so in general this is a pretty good keyword research tool you do need to pay attention to keyword difficulty I’m not going to give that away in this video because it’s so in depth and relatively complicated and we had to do basically an entire study / experiment to figure out what we wanted to say about KD so please go read the blog post I went through the keyword difficulty for a whole bunch of different keywords for all the tools including sem rush so if keyword difficulty scores are important to you please go look at the blog post before you jump into sem rush alright so that is one kind of keyword research you can do with sem rush this is the more traditional keyword research to doing a lot of things right the other type of keyword research that you can do with that same rash of course is competitor keyword research the general idea behind competitor re keyword research is that you would find a blog with low authority or similar authority to you see what’s working for them and maybe try to compete with them if it makes sense for your blog let’s look at an example with some quick research I found this site dive advisor they’re doing pretty well they have some keywords that are code clearly working for them and their growth curve is pretty good what you can do with SEM rush and one other tool which is a href is scroll down and look at all the keywords and see which is bringing in the most traffic so this is a site about diving and you can see from these keywords that they’re having a lot of success with location-based keywords so scuba diving in Mexico diving in Mexico and also some like wildlife based keywords right which is stuff that you might want to know if you’re going to go diving somewhere what are the cool things to see what you might want to look at so like this red-lipped batfish cow shark and then if you look at this full report you could see many hundreds or thousands of keywords that are working really well for this particular site of course you didn’t you wouldn’t just use one site you might use 30 or 40 or 50 sites and you might take a couple good keywords from each one so you’re not like ripping off one person’s keywords or something which would just make you kind of a bet head but you can see all the keywords that are working for them the other thing about sm rush that I’ve always really liked that has made it really easy to do competitor keyword research is their competitive positioning map so you can start with one competitor and if you don’t know any other competitors you can just go down to the competitive positioning map and see a whole bunch of other sites their relative search traffic and probably ish the relative authority right so these might be a little bit too small for us but this scuba travel co uk might be a good one to look at and this undercurrent org might be a good one to look at then if we went to those they would probably lead us to more competitors and we can essentially follow our nose forever and take a couple gig keywords for everybody but it’s a really good way to get battle-tested keywords that already work in the market from a whole bunch of different sources I have lots of videos on this that show you exactly how we do this in depth so I’m not going to go into it right now but the gist is as far as like understanding what is happening in a market and doing competitor keyword research sem rush does a really really good job of it overall I would say this is a really good keyword research tool there’s a lot of really cool features and a lot of things that are doing right I really encourage you to go read about the KD though because it is very important for all tools but in particular it’s important to know about KD
