Today we’re going to run you through the basics of using WordPress for your blog this video is about the open source blogging platform WordPress from wordpress.org not about running a blog on wordpress com WordPress is a powerful platform for blogging and other website construction that is free and open source that basically means that it’s updated and added to by its user base because of this community approach there is a large amount of support and information about using WordPress available online that is constantly maintained WordPress lets you easily update and change the design of your blog and it code and optimize the performance of your blog through settings and plugins let’s take a look at the settings here you can change your blog’s title tag line time zone and date formats what’s displayed on your front page notification and comet settings image default sizes and the ways your URLs are generated using the post name option gives each post a completely unique URL in appearance you can choose your theme and customize that theme here you can edit your site’s logo in title the color scheme of your theme your header your menu structure what widgets appear where and various other theme options every wordpress theme is different and will potentially provide different customization options check out the online resources for that particular theme for more information in additional CSS you can add extra CSS code to style your blog although if you’re not adept at CSS it’s best to avoid this for now back in appearance the editor page provides full access to the CSS PHP and HTML code of your blog again it’s best to avoid this entirely unless you’re trained in all those forms of coding pages the basic static pages of your blog your home page and about page a contact page they can all be created here posts are the posts of your blog when you want to create a new post to publish to your blog click add new in the posts menu here you’ll see a simple what you see is what you get text editor let’s write some sample text and add an image from here we can preview our post before pushing it this shows us what our post will look like once published let’s go back to the post where editing and click update now we can view the post live on our blog and here it is it’s worth mentioning that when creating a new page we use the same editor as we do for new posts so once you’ve learned how to do one you know how to do the other if your blog theme or WordPress itself needs updating there will be an alert on your dashboard it’s important to install updates to make sure your blog is secure and functional make sure you always back up your blog before installing any updates so we’ll cover this process in a separate video plugins add new functionality to your blog for a guide on how to install plugins check out our video how to install the WordPress plugin in 30 seconds now you know the basics of WordPress stay tuned for more helpful videos like your upcoming videos five essential plug in every blogger needs thanks for watching
